Low-Cost House: Hybrid Home of Cheap Cargo Containers

A low budget and a rat infestation were just a few of the many stumbling blocks standing in the way of creating this low-cost home for a low-income family in South Korea, all eventually overcome with some creative out-of-the-box thinking and clever use of inexpensive materials.

While container homes and offices can be beautiful in theory, in practice building a whole house out of containers can prove challenging. In this design by JYA-architects (images by Hwang Hyochel) part of the solution was to use containers as needed then frame with other materials around them, keeping would-be invaders (like small vermin) away from the core inhabited structures.

The resulting structure, made for a family of seven, includes three containers and a series of semi-outdoor paths, walls and rooms situated around and in between them. These are contained inside a simple metal framework, in turn spanned by doors, windows and translucent panels to create the needed degree of shade and insulation.

Having high ceilings internally also opens up future possibilities for second-story occupation on top of the containers below via ladder-or-stair-accessed decks, again inaccessible to nature’s little intruders.

A seemingly innocuous candle that reveals a somewhat morbid surprise inside, this trick could lie dormant for days, weeks or years until someone lights it up and realizes what lies beneath.

PyroPets, no doubt knowing the internet will love it, is starting with a cute cat version available via their Kickstarter campaign which they are using to turn this one-off trinket into a mass-produced piece of offbeat decor. Morbid, maybe, but undeniably cute in their own strange way, even in skeletal form.

From its creators: “PyroPet is a family of animal shaped candles that each reveal a surprise within as they burn. The first PyroPet product is a cute little cat called "Kisa". ("Kisa" means "kitty" in Icelandic). Sweet little kittens are transformed in a fire. Crawling from the ashes come forth grinning metallic devils with sharp claws and fire blazing in their eyes.”

Drawers fill up to the point they have to be dumped, cleaned, and the process restarted all over again … but what if you could hot-swap pieces and parts of your desk remain continuously clutter-free and have on hand only what you need?

This desk design by Francois Dransart proposes a system of modular boxes that can be traded in and out to serve a variety of storage, lighting and other functions.

The basic legs-and-surface stay the same, but the slots allow one to optimize one’s workspace on an ongoing basis and take away unused items when shifting between tasks.

Papers and pens can go in one box, cords in another – a charging plate can be swapped for more storage on demand. Leather for lift straps gives a nice warm touch to the white swappable parts and the wooden core details.
