Fun FieldCandy Tents Range from Colorful to Camouflaged Posted: 17 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT [ Filed under Portable & in the Architecture category ] We put a great deal of thought into the design of our homes … why not our mobile habitats as well? These limited-edition designer variants will surely spice up your next camping trip. Like artists or photographers, FieldCandy releases limited-edition runs that last as long as supplies do, listing how many of each type is left on the main page of their site. The form is standardized, as are the included materials: “When you order your FieldCandy tent you will receive a smart box full of goodies, including your inner tent, your designer flysheet with a matching bag, A-frame poles, pegs, a hammer and peg puller, a spares kit, combination padlocks, full instructions, an owner’s manual and a carry bag.” The designs, however, are anything but standard – each designer comes from a different background, with information about them provided on the site – some are photographers whose work has been directly translated onto the shell and flap of a tent, while others focus on graphics. The results likewise span the aesthetic spectrum. [ Filed under Portable & in the Architecture category ] [ Dornob | Archives | Categories | Privacy | TOS ] |
Spinning Side Table Hides Stuff Below its Plain-Sight Surface Posted: 16 Jul 2012 04:00 PM PDT [ Filed under Tables & Stands & in the Furniture category ] An elegant solution to hiding storage in plain site, this lovely little design works entirely with hidden mechanisms – no handles, pulls, levers, latches, hinges or screws visible on its exterior. Inside, a secret screw-up, screw-down mechanism lets you spin the compartment down below the level of the tabletop to access what is inside, then spin it back up with a similarly simple motion. Designer Marc Venot has degrees in everything from industrial design to applied math and physics and plastics – his elegantly-engineered furniture objects show off this diversity of skills and understandings. Straight Curves: A-Frame House with a Triangular Twist Posted: 16 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT [ Filed under Contemporary & in the Architecture category ] Some architects love curves, but most learn quickly how cost-prohibitive they can be. Still, a remarkably similar effect can be accomplished using crooked angles that conform better to programmatic needs while also adding to a house’s aesthetic dimensions. Architect William O'Brien Jr created reconstructs a conventional a-frame approach in a small vacation cabin for a couple of eccentric collectors of everything from wines and books to stuffed game. A lovely series of diagrammatic deformations turns the atypical triangle at the heart of the design in various directions, balancing its flexibility and rigidity of form. The result is a kind of work-in-progress that tests the limits of triangular sections for habitable structures – width becomes a crucial element in allowing for a limited second story, while practical geometric limits inform the scope of angles between each segment.
