Canvas Chairs: 2D Fabric “Paintings” Hide Real 3D Seats Posted: 02 Jun 2013 04:00 PM PDT It looks so realistic you could almost sit in it … and, it turns out, you can. But the trick is no mere optical illusion – the painting really does sit flat until activated by interaction. Studio YOY (images by Yasuko Furukawa) created this Canvas series using a combination of wood, aluminum and flexible fabric, screen-printing the surface with drawings reflecting underlying functionality. As someone sits down, trusting it to work, the “canvas” stretches, deforming under their weight, while a hidden surface supports them. In addition to the chair, a lounger and love seat variant add some comfortable and multi-person playfulness to the mix. |
