Portable Prefab Pod Home: Compact, Minimal & Modern Posted: 23 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT Like cramped yacht cabins, many tiny homes try to cram too much into a small space – this design focuses instead on simplicity and essentials, resulting in a spacious-feeling minimalist interior. The Chamfer Home from S-Archetype “optimizes all usable spaces offering most of the amenities of a larger home, including a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom. When the house is occupied it can be extended to reach 27 square meters of carefully planned interior space.” Trailer-ready, long and thin, the house expands and contracts as needed and sets down on four adjustable feet able to adapt to smooth and uneven surfaces alike. From the designers: “We wanted to take the challenge of designing a stylish, sustainable and affordable compact home to match different contemporary lifestyles and needs. A bold design statement, an eco friendly structure that could be set up easily anywhere and a completely autonomous prefab, serving as the perfect vacation home.” |
Groovy Chair: Bent Circular Plastic Seat from Zaha Hadid Posted: 22 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT It looks a little like a warped vinyl record and is definitely of a kind of Hadid’s architectural work, at once minimal and complex, rational but curved. The design flows from a set of simple creases made in the constituent disc shape – two bends backward to form the base and structural support behind the chair, then a single crease to create the seat and backrest. Ridges running around the original circle are likewise deformed, providing another level of detail and reinforcing the visual curvature of the main frame. The plasticity of the piece makes it also feel somehow more dynamic and impermanent. Created for Sawaya & Moroni, the chair was featured this year in Milan and follows other creatively-distorted works of furniture previously made for the same company. |
