Raised Jungle Home is a Dream Treetop Perch Getaway Posted: 11 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST Perched atop a hill between a jungle and a rubber plantation, this treetop-skimming bungalow in Kalutara, Sri Lanka was built to take full advantage of this unique site. Designed by architect Narein Perera in 2009, this stunning home echoes the traditional architecture of the area. The owner who commissioned the house had a few specific requests: the home had to work as a rental property, it had to offer a relaxing space for getaways from stressful city life, and it had to allow the owner a space from which to oversee the operations of his entire 72 hectare (42 acre) estate. The home’s simple materials such as steel, timber and bamboo emphasize its connection to its surroundings. Inside, the space is large and open, featuring only three bedrooms with attached baths and a spacious common room. Employees’ quarters are housed in the wooded areas downhill from the estate bungalow, hidden beneath the lush green canopies. As such, anyone in the bungalow has unparalleled privacy. Above all, Narein Perera’s goal was to create a home that “touches the earth lightly.” With its steel supports that lift the building high above the ground, The home certainly achieves that and much more. It is a dream home that sits right in the middle of a paradise-like setting. |
Flat-Pack Fan: Bamboo Design Slides into Simple Metal Slots Posted: 10 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST A lovely legible design that also saves space when shipping, this simple-looking ceiling fan is explicitly the sum of its parts, and that is the beauty of it. Like IKEA but with perhaps a bit more class, the components of the B-Fan by Drii Design are made to be assembled on-site by the end user, but require almost no instruction as it is clear how they piece together. The four bamboo slats are themselves flat, but naturally tilted when slipped into the black metal circle that joins them to the central spinning element in the middle of it all, which, in turn, locks them into place where they overlap. |
Shove Stuff: Minimal Desk with Simple Built-In Back Shelf Posted: 10 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST The idea is simple: keep your stuff to the back, be it books or simply whatever you need to push out of the way while you get things down, and a single fold in the desk will accommodate the rest. The Kant Desk by Nils Holger Moormann has straightforward crossed ‘X’ legs made of wood, and detail-articulated panels showing how the surface pieces are slotted together. Birch plywood is covered in either straight back or basic white, minimalist options in keeping with the overall simplicity of the design and idea. |
