Full of Surprises: 300-Square-Foot Office Turned Apartment

This quirky design fits a surprising number of levels and hidden compartments into an ultra-small space, creating a system of storage and sleeping areas that help offset the necessary additions to support each floor.

Beriot Bernardini Arquitectos (images by Yen Chen) made the main floor a large open living room with a smaller kitchen counter area tucked toward the door and the bathroom behind it. White, white and more white keep the visual palette simple, open and bright.

Above, a lofted sleeping area is not tall enough to stand in but suitable for sitting or sleeping, taking advantage of the not-quite-double-height space.

In between, an interstitial area provides closet and other storage space with standing room only – but nothing else is really needed there so it all seems to work. The total result is a nice variety of spatial experiences, making one feel less stuck in the necessarily-low square footage provided.

Fold-Out Kitchenware: Compact Cabinet Deploys on Demand

Solving two classic kitchen storage issues in a single design, this minimal wood box unfolds to reveal all the dishware, kitchenware, spices and accessories you need to access while cooking.

When closed, it takes up a minimum of space thanks in part to the layered approach to the door. This extra layer is also the key to keeping things handy – accessible from both sides, while also leaving space to reach into the main volume or pull something from the inside of the door when the object is opened.

The cabinet portion is part of a larger strategy described by Bulthaup: “The workbench is for the fire and water point; the kitchen tool cabinet for crockery, cooking utensils, as well as spices and food; and the appliance housing cabinet for the oven, dishwasher and refrigerator. bulthaup b2 follows the principle of "clearing away anything superfluous." All that remains is value – the best materials, the best tools, the best raw ingredients and the best crockery.”

Range of Chairs: TV Show Seat Set Inspired by Mountains

Like episodes of a television show, the mark of a good series of furniture is how well each piece works both individually and as part of the bigger picture.

These chairs by Keisuke Fujiwara  were, in fact, featured on a TV series in Japan called Tsuuki no Koibito and the crescent moon etched into the back of one of them references the show’s title.

Put together and they resemble a natural phenomena – specifically a mountain range – but they also simply form an interesting visual. Even more neatly, they play well together when put in other configurations or even when separated from each other altogether.

Unfortunately, they were made specifically and exclusively for the show, but perhaps if there is as much interest in the furniture as in the actors the producers might be convinced to sell them in real life, too.
