Transparent Desert Shack is More Than Meets the Eye Posted: 25 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST A glance at the Lucid Stead cabin by Phillip K Smith III tells you that the impossible is happening: strips of wood are hanging, unsupported, in mid-air in the middle of a desert. The Lucid Stead began with a 70-year-old homesteader shack. Unused and out of place, Smith turned it into something magical by adding mirrors to make the structure look transparent. Indeed, when you look at the home, even close-up, the desert reflected back to you looks just like the desert that you might see when you look straight through the house. LEDs were added to the mirrors, creating a new depth to the mind-blowing illusion of an alien structure simply plopped down in the middle of the desert. The LEDs provide light to the surrounding areas, casting colorful streams onto the sand. According to Smith, the project was all about rediscovering the pleasant solitude of the desert. It is all about the interplay of light and shadow, a recurring theme in the deserts of the world. |
Alpaca Warrior Gloves: Clever Fingerless Hand Wrap Design Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST A continuous strip of fabric, like a closed scarf or headband, makes these as minimal as gloves come, lacking fingers or even full hand coverage, but offering other design benefits to compensate. Easy to take off and put on, these made-in-New-York wraps from Men in Cities help keep your hands warm while leaving your fingers free to do finer work as needed. The are stitched on the sides and semi-flexible so that sizing becomes a non-issue as well – easy to gift or share on demand. Naturally, there are no ‘left’ or ‘right’ ones, so if you stock up on a few pair and lose one it can always be swapped with another. |
Sweet Furniture: Candy-Inspired Home Furnishing Series Posted: 24 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST Readers with a sweet tooth and an eye on the Holiday season may find themselves drooling a little at this strangely delicious-looking series of furniture full of (faux) chocolate and nougat, covered caramel, powdered sugar and more. Matthias Borowski calls the set The Importance of the Obvious and spent a lot of time (like an experimental chef) working with materials to figure out what he could use to simulate different elements, materials and reflectivity of typical confections. A combination of plastics, resins and woods form the basis of most of the pieces that make up this Master’s Thesis project, but not matter how delectable they look as giant-sized candies they sadly will not match up on taste. |
Musical Stairs: Playable Harp Strings in Place of Bannisters Posted: 24 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST Playful takes on a new meaning in this project that ties taunt threads between supporting elements to turn a vintage Victorian staircase into a functional musical instrument. Leander Angerer and David Ross (images by Colin Ross via Inhabitat) composed the piece from tennis racket strings that still provide a strong measure of safety from falling while adding some interactivity to the mix. The resulting work encourages people can strum as they walk between floors, and is of course set low and thus particularly inviting for small children who would also fortuitously find it the most fun. In addition to the initial creative leap, the construction process was anything but trivial: 1000 holes had to be drilled and hundreds of meters worth of string had to be strung to complete it. |
