Garden Transition: Creative Glass Cube Home Extension Posted: 08 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST Extensions to homes often look like afterthoughts, inexpertly blended with the existing architecture or made of subpar prefabricated materials. But in the case of this home in eastern France, a creative solution for extra space has become the highlight of the entire residence. Loïc Picquet Architects pushed a new glass-fronted volume out of the back wall of the home to create an airy dining room. The addition features clean lines and textural modern materials, including a glazed wall, a concrete stairwell leading to the main living areas of the home and weathered timber siding. The new volume contrasts yet harmonizes with the traditional style of the old St. Louis home. Protruding into the garden, this creative home extension brings more natural light into the house, enlarging the kitchen and acting as a transitional space between the interior of the home and the backyard. A small, operable rectangle in the glass acts as a window within the window. |
Minimalist Fold-Up Tables Create a Versatile Work Space Posted: 07 Dec 2013 02:07 PM PST When you only occasionally need a lot of tables, but don’t have a lot of space to store furniture, fold-up designs can be the ideal solution. In this case, Moxon Architects created sleek, minimalist white work surfaces for Arts Council England that can be hoisted flat against the wall when not in use. The offices are located in a historic building, with walls clad in recycled timber. There’s only so much room for a wide variety of necessary functions, ranging from conferences to dining. The tables can be raised or lowered at the push of a button, and a weight inside the leg aligns it with a steel plate on the floor to keep it straight. Transforming furniture makes the most of an existing space, especially when that space comes at a premium and every inch counts. |
