Two-Box Home: Simple Dwelling of Dual Shipping Containers Posted: 03 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST When executed well, container architecture speaks for itself – the constituent containers become the anchors for the design around which the rest of the materials and spaces flow. This is one such exemplary structure. In the Savannah Project from PriceStreetProjects, two containers are slightly offset to create primary enclosures and space out to allow for a central entry and sky-lit hallway between the perimeter-completing boxes. Punching a few holes in the containers allows for basic movement between spaces, views out and light in, but take advantage of these pre-constructed boxes by leaving them largely more intact. The ends can also open to create alternate entry points or let in fresh air. The whole project is set up on a wood deck, trimmed and joined by wood and glass, leaving the aged metal of the containers and their existing paint jobs to provide visual contrast to these newer and cleaner materials. The offset of the pair of containers creates nice partial exterior enclosures for decks. About the architect: “Price Street Projects combines functional design with creativity to create sustainable, economical and innovative living and work environments. Based in Miami and Brooklyn, PSP specializes in building structures made from shipping containers, each unique to its site and use, blending art and architecture to explore the boundaries of the traditional construction/building model. PSP was founded in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 by artist/architect/designer, Julio Garcia.” |
Stop Chopping Logs: Cylindrical Stove Burns Whole Trees Posted: 02 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST As iconic as the imagery of a rugged individual splitting wood in the middle of winter may be, it can be somewhat less enjoyable for the person tasked with the work. This Spruce Stove lets you feed in a long log like a pencil into a sharpener, so all you have to do is strip away small branches from a tree’s sides to make it fit. The adjustable aperture allows one to open or close the hole into which the wood is fed based on the diameter of the log. The entire process becomes a way to measure the passage of time and clearly see how much heat one has left before needing to knock down another tree to feed the fire. |
Green Flowers to Red Fires: Table Shifts Between Seasons Posted: 02 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST Fireplaces are a sort of single-season element in most cases, turned on in the winter and left empty the rest of the year – but what if the same illuminating space could be put to other uses? Jean-Marie Massaud proposes Seasons, a table with a void that can be filled with anything from stones or fish to fire or flowers, allowing you to add greenery during the summer then turn up the heat toward the end of fall … or put something else in the middle that you wish to feature at any time of year. The fully-transparent design allows whatever is placed in the center to have maximum visibility, whether it be dynamic fire, living fish, growing greens, stoic stones or anything in between. |
