The TSA says no to broken and uncharged gadgets Posted: 07 Jul 2014 10:54 AM PDT Because you never know if that iPad could be a bomb, the TSA has come up with a new regulation: gadgets must be charged and turned on before boarding a plane. Overseas airports with flights towards the USA have a new regulation: travelers need to turn on their electronics before TSA checkpoints, and broken and out-of-power devices are absolutely banned. This is meant to prevent bomb-makers from believing they can disguise their explosive charges as whichever gadget they desire in checked bags. Failure to comply means that your gadget will be immediately confiscated, so goodbye tablets, phones, or laptops: if you don’t turn on, this is the last time we see each other. What’s next? The TSA asking for your iTunes password to ensure you’ve paid for all of the songs you currently have on your device? The TSA has a reputation for being too extremist with these measures that in the end do not add up to much, but we’re wondering if this is not the point where the average Joe might just realize they’re going too far. Could Hacking Your Friend’s Facebook Land You In Jail? Posted: 07 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT A new ruling in an Irish court suggests that countries could make the hacking of someone's Facebook account – even a friend's – a criminal offense.
You could quite offensively call it a 'frape', a portmanteau of Facebook + rape (rape is never a joke, so don't ever call it this), a 'Facebook hack' or 'a bit of harmless fun' but there are few things that see us erupt into a fit of hearty giggles like typing "I smell of poo!" into a friend's status bar and hitting 'post'. Because we are all 5 years old at heart and that stuff is hilarious. But somewhere along the lines of saying your best friend "has a tiny penis" or tricking your parents into think that your sister's pregnant, Facebook hacking can take a sinister turn. Sometimes it can be incredibly malicious and even if it's not mean and is just plain bothersome, there is the chance that it could not only see you hit with a hefty fine, but it could potentially see you ending up in jail. That's because of a ruling in a court in the Republic of Ireland. In plenty of countries (the UK and the US included), your Facebook account can already be used against you as evidence of trolling, bullying or harassment as although it's digital, if it can be attributed to you then it's fair game for those looking out for the law. However, this case in Ireland takes it further as one man took it upon himself to hack is ex-girlfriend's Facebook account and post a nasty status update using her phone and after pleading not-guilty to some more serious offenses against the woman, he did plead guilty to the Facebook hacking, facing a $2,700 fine as a result. A typical offense like this may be considered as a cybercrime, which has its own penalties but here the man was prosecuted under the Criminal Damage Act, which is as if to say that the woman's Facebook account was her personal property and he vandalised it. The penalty for vandalism is usually a fine, just like the one he got but in the most serious cases of graffiti gone wild (specifically against expansive property) it's seen people land in the slammer for a few days at a minimum. We'd all like to avoid that though, so if you've got something mean to say on someone's Facebook account, a word of advice is just don't. Source: Irish Times Be social! Game Girl, a portable gaming solution for classics lovers Posted: 07 Jul 2014 06:00 AM PDT The classics come back to the forefront with this clever use of 3d printing and electronics! Meet the Game Girl, an effort to bring back the classics to the forefront. Nintendo has done great things since the Game Boy, when it comes to portable systems, but the truth is the 3DS doesn’t really capitalize on the love for the classics. Until Nintendo gets their Virtual Console act together (and from what we’ve seen, this might take time), the guys at Adafruit have come up with a solution for the meanwhile. The Game Girl (PiGRRL) is a Raspberry Pi Linux PC put inside a case resembling the classic Game Boy. It uses some components from a SNES controller, just so you know the d-pad works like it should, but the rest is all modern technology. The project was created to celebrate the 25 years of the Game Boy, but that’s not all it can emulate/run, as NES, SNES, Gameboy and even Gameboy Advance are all playable on this little guy. Now, tell us you’re not in love. Via The Mary Sue Be social! HTC Finds Sales Success With The One M8 Posted: 07 Jul 2014 05:00 AM PDT HTC makes great phones, but doesn’t always get the sales it needs to succeed. Although recent numbers suggest that’s starting to change.
HTC has had a great run the past several years since introducing its “One” brand. The phones are traditionally very highly reviewed and receive multiple top industry awards, but HTC has not been able to translate this success into sales numbers, posting losses quarter after quarter for several years now. Finally, HTCs diligence and pursuit of quality has paid off–literally–in the form of $92 million in profit off of $2.2 billion in total revenue. These numbers may not be significant when compared to Apple or Samsung, but for HTC it marks a turnaround, and hopefully indicates that the general public is now more familiar with HTC and associates the One brand with HTCs commitment to quality. Although the new HTC One M8 is likely a large component of HTCs improved sales numbers, HTC has also gone above and beyond with its commitment to customer satisfaction through programs such as the HTC Advantage. In addition to the HTC One branding, HTC has changed up its marketing game and may also be getting its name out there through social media and other mediums. Since this is the same quarter that the HTC One M8 was launched in, it will be interesting to see if sales remain steady, or if the device launch marks the peak of HTCs performance for 2014. Although its biggest product has already been announced, HTC may yet have some additional surprises incoming. HTC has long been rumored to be entering the smartwatch race, which we will likely see shortly before christmas this year. HTC has also been long rumored to be working on a new Nexus tablet, which was not announced at Google I/O, but we may still see that this fall with the launch of Android L. With both iOS 8 and Android L incoming before the end of the year, the smartphone landscape may be in for some shifting, but if HTC can maintain its commitment to quality and keep sales up, then we may get to see some new life breathed into the long struggling smartphone manufacturer.
