Folders Come To Newest Wii U Firmware Update

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 09:45 AM PDT

Nintendo Wii U Folders 5.2.0 firmware image

Nintendo's latest firmware update for the Wii U brings folders to the console's OS.

On Monday, Nintendo dropped the news of a new firmware update for the Nintendo Wii U (available to download now). The shining star for the update, version 5.2.0, is the inclusion of folders, which now allows Wii U owners to organize their home menus and arrange software icons.

The Nintendo 3DS has had the same "create folders" option since April 2012, which is notably later than it should have been implemented in the first place. But thankfully, especially for Wii U enthusiasts who have a mess of gaming content on their front page, the feature is finally here, and works exactly as it does on the 3DS.

Moving on to other 5.2.0 changes, the update also adds a Download Management icon to the Wii U menu; the Quick Start Menu now displays when the Wii U is turned on from the GamePad TV Remote; an Options icon has been added to Power Settings, which lets users to rearrange software from the Quick Start Menu, and the design and layout for the Home menu has been tweaked to be easier on the eyes.

Finally, of course, further improvements to overall system stability also come with this firmware update, so thanks, Nindy! For a more detailed list of what Wii U firmware update 5.2.0 entails, head on over to Nintendo's support website and take a gander for yourselves.

Windows 10 Will Be a Free Upgrade for Windows 8 Users

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 08:02 AM PDT

Microsoft Windows presentation

With Windows 10 now confirmed, one Microsoft exec says that it will be offered as a free upgrade to Windows 8 users.

Hurray! Hurrah! Yippee! Windows 8 will soon be a thing of the past as Windows 10 was recently announced by Microsoft, killing off all of the Windows 8 features that we hated and bringing with it the things we’ve been asking for for years. For most people Windows 8 was an operating system that we put up with and Windows 10 is clearly the better option; a bit like having a crush on someone at school only to discover that their older sibling is better looking, with a fast car and hair that swishes just right in the breeze. Alas, Windows 10 is very exciting but further still, for all of those that were scorned by its predecessor, Microsoft’s next operating system is set to be a free upgrade for Windows 8 users.

That info comes form Indonesian publication Detik who explained that whilst speaking at an event taking place at the Hotel Mulia in Jakarta, the President of Microsoft, Indonesia Andreas Diantoro, confirmed the upgrade plans. In a quote from their site (Google translated) “Easy, when the OS (Windows 9) was launched later, users who have been using Windows 8 just need to do the update via his device. It will be installed automatically.” While there’s little reason to doubt the words, it’s unclear whether or not “(Windows 9)” is something that Diantoro said or if it’s something the site itself included. Presuming that people haven’t suddenly started saying the words ‘open and closed brackets’ in conversation without me knowing it, it seems more likely that Diantoro generally referred to Microsoft’s ‘next operating system’ which we now know to be called Windows 10, and not Windows 9.

However, the reasons to believe the Microsoft Indonesia President are in the statistics. So many people were turned off by Windows 8′s removal of the Start button and its uncomfortable, touchscreen-friendly layout that the majority just continued to use Windows 7, never making that upgrade. As a result, Windows 8 is found on just 13.4% of PCs despite being released almost two years ago, so if Microsoft wants to make good with those who bought Windows 8 machines and didn’t like it, a free upgrade would certainly be the way to do it.

LG Has a webOS Smartwatch in the Works

LG webOS Smartwatch 01

Samsung must have inspired their fellow Korean manufacturer to think that there’s life beyond Android and that wearables don’t necessarily have to rely on Google’s mobile OS. That or maybe LG simply wants to add some diversity to its range of wearables.

Once a mobile operating system and then an OS for smart TVs, the Palm-developed and HP-owned webOS, which is now the property of LG, is ready to make a comeback on mobile devices, but this time on wearables. It’s not like any of you thought that this OS would crawl back to its hole and die… or did you?

LG gave signs at CES 2014 that webOS is still alive and kicking when it showcased a new smart TV running it. The Bean Bird that has become somewhat of a mascot of LG’s webOS TVs has been recently spotted on a developer website teasing the LG webOS smartwatch. Judging by the stylized classically designed analog timepiece that the Bean Bird is carrying on its back, people should probably conclude that the next LG smartwatch will feature a circular face, much like the G Watch R, the Android Wear device that will go on sale later this month.

All is nice and great, but companies who refuse to cut the life support of old (and most probably obsolete) operating systems, or who keep developing new ones seem to forget a very important detail: app developers end up working extra hours in order to ensure compatibility with their OS. Instead of keeping it simple, LG, Samsung and many others think that they can develop a new operating system that’s different.

With LG webOS smartwatches will probably come webOS smartphones, if the Korean manufacturer wants to limit compatibility to their own brand. That’s something that Chinese companies will try and succeed to disrupt, as their wearables are compatible with a wider range of mobile devices. That is, unless China replaces current popular operating systems with its own home-grown OS, which is due for launch this month.

Right after the the South Korean tech giant discovered that The Verge covered this story, they pulled the developer site, with the most probable intention to launch it again just before unveiling the wearable officially.

London’s Phone Booths to Become Solar Powered Charging Stations

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 12:14 PM PDT

Solarbox

Phone booths are somewhat of a cultural symbol of London, and that not only because of a 50-year old TV series about a mad man with a box. Since it would be a pity to throw them away, two entrepreneurs figured out that these would look great as solar powered charging stations.

Solarbox, as the project developed by Kirsty Kenney and Harold Craston is called, couldn’t have become a reality with Boris Johnson, the mayor of London. Of course, in order to repurpose something that’s on the public domain, the two London School of Economics (LSE) graduates would’ve needed some official permissions from the city hall, but that’s not it. Johnson organized the Low Carbon Entrepreneur competition, and Kenney and Craston are this year’s big winners, as they managed to get $8,000 in funding.

In an interview with the BBC, Creston explained how he came up with the idea of repurposing one of London’s emblems: “I lived next to a phone box in my second year at uni and walked past it every day. I thought, ‘There are 8,000 of these lying unused in London and we must be able to find a use for them.’”

The first Solarbox was unveiled yesterday on Tottenham Court Road in London, while the second one will be put in service in January. More such solar-powered green boxes will follow, and that can only be considered good news, especially since using them will be free of charge. That’s right, anyone with phones, tablets, cameras and other devices whose batteries are running low will be able to charge them using the Solarbox.

As Mayor Johnson pointed out, “In our modern world, where hardly any Londoner is complete without a raft of personal gizmos in hand, it’s about time our iconic boxes were update for the 21st Century, to be useful, more sustainable.” The boxes will be able to charge up to 100 phones a day, but I wonder exactly how they are planning to pull this one.

The green color of the repurposed phone booths makes sense, since it’s green energy that we’re talking about. However, after changing them from blue to red, it will take people a while to get used to the new color, especially the shade they went for is pretty strident.
