Woman Addicted to Mayonnaise Will Use It for Everything. And I Mean Everything!

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:09 AM PDT

Philippa Garfield, from London, England, loves mayonnaise so much she will eat it with pretty much anything, and even wash her hair with it.

We’ve featured some pretty weird addictions here on Oddity Central, from the guy addicted to sausages, to the woman who loved drinking her own urine, but Philippa Garfield takes things to a whole other level. While mayo might not be the strangest thing a person can become addicted to, it’s the way she uses it that makes her story really bizarre. Although she loves eating mayo and pours it over anything she eats, and even in her morning coffee, Philippa also uses the fatty condiment as a cheap moisturizer and conditioner for her hair. She also sees it as the perfect alternative to shaving cream.

The Diagonal View video doesn’t reveal how Philippa Garfield first got addicted to mayo, but it makes it very clear she likes the stuff a little too much. She apparently eats it with everything, even desserts which I find pretty disgusting. The smell of her hair after a mayonnaise shower isn’t very appealing, either.

Artist Makes Portraits of Famous People from Thousands of Words

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 04:24 AM PDT

Ralph Ueltzhoefer probably took the saying “a picture is worth a thousands words” because he actually builds detailed images from thousands of written words.

The Mannheim-based German artist takes photos of celebrities from the Internet and recreates their portraits with words randomly-selected from Internet biographies, fragments of words and phrases, and Wikipedia articles that have come to define these famous people. Ueltzhoefer sets the white text line by line on the dark background, thus making a statement about how media defines our every day lives in a Web-centered world. His Textportraits are a symbiosis between text and photo, biography and portrait, a readable version of two different components.

"The art project text portrait exclusively works with personal data in most different combinations on thousands of websites. Text portrait is not as usually limited to only one internet website, but spreads out to in the meantime hundreds of websites worldwide. Thousands of clicks daily grant this project great power of information. The art project text portrait purposefully abuses personal data and links these directly to the TEXTPORTRAIT project. As the art project, due to its capacity, reproduces itself independently through the net, there has been no way to end this project promptly for some time", the artist states on his website.

Velodrawings – Art Made with Bicycle Skid Marks

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 03:05 AM PDT

Berlin-based Christian Grillitsch is a bicycle-drawing artist who creates beautiful and engaging artworks by skidding his bicycle wheel across the canvas.

Riding a bicycle is fun and healthy, but Austrian artist Christian Grillitsch has found a way to use this hobby to create some pretty unique works of art. Called “Velodrawings” his creations are skid marks left on white canvases. Sounds easy enough, and although we all like to wear out our tires like this, I doubt most of us can create the same stuff Grillitsch does. All he needs is white canvases, double sided tape to stick it to the floor, a bike, and the talent to skid at the right time without falling flat on his face.

If you’re in London, you can stop by Tony’s Gallery to see Christian Grillitsch’s velodrawings in person. I read they’re even more impressive when seen from up close, and if you’re lucky you can watch the artist do a live demonstration outside the gallery. His exhibition ends on July 15, so make sure you don’t miss it.
