Kind Trophies: Repurposed Bike Parts Replace Dead Heads

Displaying trophies of taxidermied animal heads on your wall is passé – and pretty gross. Designer Andreas Scheiger has completely transformed the idea of wall trophies with his series of functional bike part wall hangings. Using old bike saddles and handlebars, he creates a fun but useful piece of art that bears a striking resemblance (shape-wise, anyway) to the far less friendly traditional wall trophy.

Each “head” consists of a bike seat with handlebars mounted just above that, both on a wooden plaque. No two are alike as the designer uses found parts to make each trophy unique. From parts that look almost new with their funky colors and patterns to the grizzled, falling-apart, well-loved pieces, each wall art item easily reflects the personality of its owner.

The series, called Upcycle Fetish, also has a practical purpose as hanging storage. The handlebars on each piece hold everything from bikes to hats to umbrellas – whatever you need to keep up and off of the ground. Seeing the “trophies” in use makes them even more appealing since they are not only cruelty-free, but upcycled and useful. It makes for the perfect combination and a rather rad line of products.

Balancing Act: Kitschy Lamp Clamps Onto Any Flat Surface

Flexibility is key where lighting is concerned; any good lighting fixture should work in many different locations in your home so that you can rearrange at will. The Clamp Lamp from designer Ola Giertz was designed for Swedish lighting brand Oriva. Its extreme flexibility make it suitable for any room, and for any place in a room.

Shaped like a large wooden clothespin with a light bulb on one end, the Clamp Lamp can sit atop a surface on its flat bottom edge. Alternatively, it can be hung from a flat surface such as a shelf or table edge.

Although the clothespin-shaped lamp doesn’t actually hinge and move like a real clothespin, it does have the kitschy appeal of the retro laundry accessory.

The small light bulb on the outside edge of the wooden lamp’s base looks a bit like a decorative holiday light. The overall effect is one of a whimsical but utterly useful home accessory that would look charming in any room.

Simple Table Modification Can Keep Bags Safe + Clean

shopping bag holding table

At some point in the past, we realized just how disgusting it was to set handbags down on floors wherever we go and then keep them on the table while eating at a restaurant. Handbag hangers soon became a common sight in restaurants. Somehow, no one has yet addressed the sanitary or safety issues involved with setting shopping bags down on the ground as you eat or enjoy a short break from your day.

A team of designers realized the need for a better table design – and hence the HangOut table was created. The concept and execution are quite simple: a small cutout in the table’s surface gives you a place to hang your shopping bags as well as your handbag or laptop bag.

The design keeps your bags off of the ground so they don’t get dirty, but more importantly it can help keep you from being robbed. Placing bags beneath a table in a public place is common practice for many women, but it’s certainly not safe. The HangOut table keeps bags directly at hand and in your line of sight – and best of all, it shouldn’t cost any more to produce than a standard table.
