Living Container: Flexible, Adaptable and Open Interiors Posted: 25 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT Rooms lacking walls and built-in surfaces may not provide much privacy, but they enable boundless flexibility, so the occupants can use them however they like. Tokyo-based Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop envisions the House in Kashiwa as a ‘container’ that organizes living spaces without constricting or defining their purpose. Within the main volume, four wooden two-story boxes are angled toward a central open space. Full-height glazed walls allow sunlight to pour into the entire structure, including each individual room. The first floor of each box can function as a kitchen, bathroom, work space or bedroom, while the second level has been left ‘blank.’ The idea is that clothes, kitchen goods and hobby-related items can be freely placed, so that if the family’s needs change, they can simply switch the rooms around. For example, the arrival of a baby during the design stage required no change in plans, since there were already so many undefined spaces available. The glazed walls and interior boxes are angled so that they frame views trees or the sky rather than a neighboring house, providing some sense of privacy despite the extremely open design. |
In the Belly of the Beast: Big Brown Bear Sleeping Bag Posted: 24 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT There aren’t many people who would be willing to put themselves inside the hungry jaws of a bear, but designer Eiko Ishizawa wants you to do just that. The designer’s Great Sleeping Bear Bag lets you unzip the “body” and climb inside for a comfy evening of restful – if somewhat bizarre – sleep. The sleeping bag was inspired by the story of a brown bear called Bruno who wandered from the Italian Alps all the way to Germany – the first brown bear to do so in some 170 years. Not being the friendliest chap in the world, though, Bruno amused himself by dining on livestock…and a few people. The government decided to put him down in 2006, much to the dismay of animal lovers. Ishizawa decided to pay homage to Bruno by creating a sleeping bear that would allow people to feel the warm comfort of being inside of a bear without the unpleasant chewing part. Each sleeping bag is custom made to order, and the designer encourages owners of the sleeping bag to send in pictures of them using the bags so that Bruno can travel all around the world without the fear of extermination. ... |
Playful Sculpted Goldfish Inhabit Modern Minimalist Tables Posted: 24 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT When you absolutely have to sit in a room and wait for an appointment – or anything, really – it’s always more pleasant to watch fish peacefully gliding around in their watery homes. This feeling of serenity of fish inspired the “Up in the Air” table series by designers Ramón Úbeda and Otto Canalda for furniture company Viccarbe. The tables look like plain white cylinders from the side. They are tall, statuesque and quite striking on their own, but when you get closer the lovely goldfish in the tables’ tops become visible. The fish are actually hand-crafted and sealed in an environmentally-friendly resin. At once sophisticated and playful, these tall tables add an attractive minimalist element to a room. The unexpected addition of the incredibly life-like goldfish lends an almost child-like sunniness to the tables’ otherwise quite grown-up look. |
