Beam Portable Projector Is a Smart Replacement for Light Bulbs Posted: 18 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Projectors don’t often make the news, and if they do, it’s because they’re getting more portable. Beam is a smart projector with an unusual form factor that’s meant to change the way we’re using such devices. There are two things that seem ubiquitous in our lives: mobile devices and sources of artificial light. Beam is a smart projector that merely acts as a bridge between the two, while focusing on new surfaces to project pictures and videos on. Developed by Beam Labs, this patent pending projector was designed to screw in light bulb sockets and project images on tables or other nearby surfaces. When used for this purpose, the Beam also doubles as an LED light, so the functionality of the lamp you’d install it on is not lost. The light socket compatible smart projector itself is running Android, but the companion app is available for both Android and iOS devices. Once installed, it can be used for projecting pictures or videos using Airplay or Miracast. Its applications are numerous, including projecting movies on the ceiling, displaying Powerpoint presentations, projecting menus on a restaurant’s wall, and so on. Besides Wi-Fi, Beam also uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to various devices, and since most (if not all) modern day smartphones and tablets feature these connectivity options, there will be no issues establishing a connection. Apart from the broadcasting technologies that are implemented into it, you might think that this projector doesn’t differ that much from its counterparts. However, the “if this then that” approach would prove you wrong right away. Beam can be scheduled to trigger certain actions when specific events take place. For example, if your significant other comes home from work and connects to the local Wi-Fi network, the projector starts playing a video message you left for him or her. Beam is currently featured on Kickstarter, where its developers are looking to raise $200,000 by March 24, so that the smart projector enters mass production. According to Kicktraq, the goal will not only be reached, but also surpassed many times, if the current trend continues. In that scenario, anyone who has pledged $369 or more as an early bird, or $399 as a regular backer will get the Beam smart projector with the fabric cable in October 2015. Be social! Halo helmet for motorcycles: almost cosplay? Posted: 18 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Don’t be surprised if starting now you start seeing Master Chief riding around on cities and freeways around the world: it’s just an incredible helmet, not John-117. With video games becoming more and more a part of popular culture it’s not weird to start seeing references to our favorite games in our daily lives, including commutes, In the case of motorcyclists. Turns out NECA has created a special helmet for them, one with all the special safety measures required for a safe trip, but one that is also a perfect replica of the one Master Chief wears in the beloved Halo series. The main thing about these helmets is that they combine safety with geekiness, with all pertinent measures in place to ensure the users get to their destination safely. The helmet’s exterior has a layer of UV protection as well as some ventilation holes and straps to secure it into place. The inside part is meant to be comfortable, and can be disassembled to be easily cleaned. This helmet is a special edition and only some 42,100 units will be produced in four different sizes. If you want one yourself, they are coming out in July 2015 and only NECA will be selling them. Good luck and good hunting! Be social! Google Buys Odysee: Is Google Plus About to Get an Overhaul? Posted: 18 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST As Google buys photo and video storage app Odysee, rumours are beginning to swirl that the search giant is about to overhaul Google Plus.
With 300 million active users and over 500 million people registered, Google’s social media network Google Plus is actually doing far better than Twitter (200 million active users). But considering the amount of articles proclaiming that the service is dead, you wouldn’t know it. While Facebook is used for sharing holiday snaps and Twitter is used for sharing details about your lunch, Google Plus is predominantly used for professional networking (sort of like a more public version of LinkedIn) and its lack of appeal to young people means it gets a bad rep. In fact, Google Plus is doing so well that Google wants to launch its popular Google+ Photos feature as a standalone service. How do we know this? Because they’ve just bought Odysee, an iOS and Android app that lets its users backup photos taken on their mobile devices and save them on their home computers. A statement on Odysee’s website explains:
According to reports, Odysee will gift Google+ Photos with more offline capabilities. Odysee explains that it is "especially designed for people who take a lot of videos and would like the option of saving them at their full quality" so we fully expect that (at least) to be one of the upcoming features. As Google+ Photos already stores all of your videos online, in one place, but as people grow wary of just how much data Google stores on us (and they store a lot) this will keep them under Google’s wing but will give them more privacy and more peace of mind. Furthermore, Google wants to compete with Instagram, Facebook and Dropbox which all encourage users to save their images online and this will certainly help them do it.
