Xbox One burgers being sold in China

Xbox Burger 1

Forget about the food chains you know, now it’s all about getting sandwiches themed after the consoles you like – and if the one you picked was the Xbox One, you need to see what the Chinese did.

Console wars, food wars, war, war never changes. What does change is our dietary preferences and now we absolutely feel like having an Xbox One themed burger, like the ones you can currently buy in China.

These are the first few leaked pictures of the official Xbox One burger, a product of Microsoft and the Chinese fast food chain Triple-O’s. These stores will be open in Hong Kong throughout March, and will not only sell food but also have dedicated space to the console and the games themselves, now that consoles are being sold again in China after many, many years.

The burger itself is not a special burger, but the regular Chicken Supreme Burger from the chain with special sauce and Xbox One packaging – but they really drive the point home by theming the entire restaurant after Microsoft’s console, with the entire business dressed in green and Xbox logos on the tables.

Anyone getting an Xbox One in China in the next few weeks will be also getting a special coupon for a burger, although you can buy the burger without having to get a console first if you just walk into the store.

This is the same marketing technique Activision uses in the west with select chains and their Call of Duty promotions, yet it’s a first for China, and the first time a console maker does it themselves as far as we are aware. Now we want a Triple-O in our area so we can try these…

Beam, the smart projector that works like a lamp

Beam smart projector 1

A group of engineers from LA are working on a solution to the issue of sharing media with groups without having to carry screens around. This solution is Beam.

In the last few years several users and media enthusiasts have switched from screens to projectors, after growing frustrated at trying to find a good, proper screen. And while a projectors’ quality is undeniable, they are severely lacking in the portability field – that is, unless this KickStarter turns out right. What you see in this feature is called beam, and it can turn any flat surface into a giant screen from a little projector that can be plugged in like any bulb.

Beam is a mini projector with a computer inside that allows users to play games, watch movies, or share content from smartphones or tablets on any wall. Using an app for either Android or iOS Beam can be configured as a projector, and by connecting it to any light socket or plugging it straight to a wall using its companion cable it will turn into a giant, light and portable screen of sorts.

Beam can be associated with any Android or iOS gadget, but also works by itself and allows users to watch TV, play games, project recipes on the kitchen or even reproduce music through its speakers. Beam is all about versatility, giant screens and portability, and we can’t think of any other gadgets where these three values meet. Furthermore, the visual aspect isn’t compromised either: Beam is quite pretty, as you can tell in these pics.

This project will be brought to life via a Kickstarter project, where they have already gotten the money for the initial development, and have doubled what they asked for tackling some of the famous stretch goals, adding new features and characteristics to Beam itself. If you like what you see, you should know you can buy one for some $400 USD – at least before it reaches its commercial stage.

Apple to Launch a Public Beta Program for iOS

iOS8

In order to prevent future operating systems from having bugs at launch, Apple is preparing to launch a public beta system for iOS.

Touted as a massive overhaul to Apple’s iOS operating system, iOS 8 was meant to bring new health and fitness features to users of Apple’s mobile devices. With apps like Healthbook that collected data from all health related apps and could even push that information towards your doctor, many people were excited to download it upon release.

However, the launch didn’t quite go to plan and iOS 8 was plagued with bugs that weren’t solved for almost an entire fortnight. Particularly troublesome issues including the loss of the text or call function on some iPhones that had iOS 8 installed. This was tremendously embarrassing for Apple, who had talked up a storm about iOS 8 prior to release and so to prevent these launch issues in future, the Cupertino, Calif. company is reportedly looking to launch a public beta program for iOS.

The decision to roll out a public beta program follows a launch of the public beta for OS X Yosemite on Mac which was released in October, 2014. That was successful and saw Yosemite released without many big issues. Although 1 million people were able to test Yosemite, reports suggest that just 100,000 people will be able to take part of the first iOS beta – for iOS 8.3 – in March. That decision has been made to keep a “high level of exclusivity” and so the number of people allowed in is unlikely to change with the public beta for iOS 9. This makes sense given that iOS betas are usually only available for developers who pay $99 a year for the privilege.

On top of bug busting, Apple is also hoping that this will reduce the demand of unauthorised releases of iOS beta builds. It’s been a common problem for Apple in the past that people would pay for developer accounts but then sell iOS beta builds to the masses. Given that iOS beta builds are technically a work in progress, it’s no wonder why Apple wouldn’t want them floating around.

There are currently no details on how to get into the iOS public beta but we’ll keep you posted once we know more.
