Star Wars snow sculptures are unbelievably cool

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 10:55 AM PST

Star Wars Snow Sculpture 7

Sapporo’s snow festival has begun in Japan, and along with it came many incredible, beautiful and well designed snow sculptures.Yet it was a very particular set that caught our attention, one featuring the most recognizable faces from Star Wars.

The centerpiece of this year’s Snow Festival at Sapporo Japan is an incredible Star Wars themed sculpture which draws equal inspiration from Star Wars and Mount Rushmore – the Keystone national monument featuring the faces of historical American presidents.

The sculpture itself is 15 meters high, 22.6 meters wide, and 20 meters deep according to ITMedia y Game Watch. Over 700 tons of snow were used for its creation, which required some five trucks to transport it to Sapporo. This is the most snow that has ever been used in this festival, according to their creators.

Could Samsung Be On of the Main Suppliers for the Next iPhone?

iPhone Teardown

Despite the vicious rivalry between the two companies, it seems that Apple and Samsung are going to work together on the next iPhone.

It’s no secret that Apple and Samsung do not like each other. The two electronics manufacturers have fought it out on everything from patents to territory and with Samsung controlling a majority of the smartphone market (a market share that they would do anything to protect), the companies are constantly battling each other for sales.

Apple certainly seemed to have dealt a mighty blow against its South Korean rivals late last year when they released the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Whilst the two iPhones couldn’t compete against Samsung’s high-end handsets on power, they did compete on size, meaning that those who would have bought one of Samsung’s famously large-screened handsets opted for Apple’s devices instead.

The two phones did famously well, becoming the best selling iPhones to date, something Samsung was likely unhappy with. But as this rivalry wages on, could Apple and Samsung actually be working together? A new report seems to suggest so.

According to the Maeil Business Newspaper in South Korea, Samsung will be the main supplier of chipsets for the next iPhone. According to MBN’s sources in the semiconductor industry, Samsung beat out competition from Qualcomm and TMSN (two other big names in the industry) and will be proving around 75% of the chipsets for Apple’s next flagship. Meanwhile, Reuters added that Samsung will be making the chipsets at their Austin, Texas plant.

While the information could just be brushed off as a rumour, there are also plenty of reasons to believe it. First and foremost, there’s the fact that Samsung has provided Apple with chipsets before, having worked with them on the iPhone 5S. Apple chose to work with TMSN for the iPhone 6 instead and while it’s unclear as to why TMSN haven been dropped, Samsung and Apple have history. Furthermore, Samsung has had issues with Qualcomm’s chipsets recently, saying that they overheat so this could also have been a factor in Apple’s decision.

Apple’s next iPhone is unlikely to be unveiled for a few months, but we’ll have more for you then.

Araig gaming suit: feel the game on your skin

Posted: 08 Feb 2015 08:37 PM PST

Araig suit

If Oculus Rift was the beginning of our exploration of virtual realities and spaces, ARAIG is the only logical continuation to all that.

ARAIG stands for “as real as it gets”, and that’s the most literal yet fitting name for a gadget so far: this is a suit that users can wear to enhance and change the way they experience virtual reality, especially when gaming. As of now, games are only experienced via sound and sight, but ARAIG wants to add some more. This wearable technology uses vibration, compression, sound and several other techniques to simulate the different effects in any given scene: you can feel, for example, the rain on your shoulders, an explosion in the distance or hits on your body. This multiplatform system can also combine with all other peripherals to immerse you in the game: it’s literally the closest you can get to “feel” the game without actually having to, say, get beheaded if you play Dark Souls.

ARAIG is the name for the whole set of wearable gadgets, including the Exoskeleton, a Decoder for your platform of choice, a rechargeable power cell and cord. And while there have been other attempts at a haptic suit before, what makes ARAIG different is its capacity to provide localized sound and feedback instead of being a bulky suit with a speaker – also, making sure you can still move around without constricting you because going to the bathroom every once in a while is necessary.

Readers interested in the project can now head over to Kickstarter where the ARAIG team are trying to get the suit to happen via crowdfunding. As of now, $300 USD can land you your very own suit for a product that is going to end up costing some $500 USD at launch – and from then on, the other rewards and stretch goals look quite tempting too, so be sure to read thoroughly because the team has a lot to offer.
