UDI U818A Drone Shows Its Acrobatic Skills

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 01:13 PM PST

UDI 818A Camera Drone 02

While most drones are limited to moving in the horizontal and vertical planes, UDI U818A also has some acrobatic skills, as it can evert at the flick of a button.

Thanks to its 6-axis gyroscope, the UDI U818A is extremely precisely during flight. Imagine what it would be like for a drone with an erratic flight pattern to attempt performing an eversion. There’s no point in saying that it would end disastrously, as that’s pretty obvious. UDI RC, the manufacturer of this drone, takes pride in having created a quadcopter that does 3D full flight, meaning that it can go Up/Down, Left/Right, Forward/Backward, Leftward flying/Rightward flying without any problems.

On top of that, UDI U818A is also capable of flying in suspension, as well as doing 360-degree flips. These tricks, along with the previously mentioned flight patterns make the drone quite versatile, fact that ensures endless fun while flying it, for both kids and grown-ups. Even though the quadcopter is built so that parts of its body also act as blade guards, the manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years and up, as younger kids could approach the blades without realizing the consequences.

The 3.7V 500mAh LiPO included in the package takes approximately 120 minutes to fully charge, upon which it can keep the drone up and running (or rather flying) for anywhere between 6 and 9 minutes. That variation is caused by whether you decide to shoot video while flying the drone. The controlling distance is of about 30 meters, and while you could argue that there are drones that go much farther than that, I have to ask you what is the point of all that if you can’t see the acrobatic tricks the drone is performing?

Included in the box are the 2.4Ghz remote control, a battery charger, the battery, one set of 4 spare propellers, a 2GB microSD card and a spare screwdriver.

The 2GB microSD card that comes with the drone is used whatever video or photos you shoot with the included camera module. As far as this aspect is concerned, the resolution could be better (the module records at 640×480), but for a beginner who is more interested on how the camera moves rather on the quality of what it records, the UDI U818A is great. There is no live feed, so every time you need to see what the camera has filmed, you’ll have to download everything via USB cable.

Make sure you check the Drones category of our site if you’re looking for quadcopters with HD cameras.

UDI U818A can be purchased on Amazon for $84.95 (with more parts and bundles available here), so if conventional drones bore you, and think that acrobatic tricks could change all that, don’t think twice! Ordering it now ensures delivery before Christmas, so you’ll even get to make yourself or your kid happy these holidays with a gift like no other.

Doppler Labs Here Active Listening Sound Experience

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 12:21 PM PST

The Here Active Listening System(TM) is the first in-ear system designed to let you instantly control and personalize your live audio environment. Here consists of two wireless, in-ear buds and a connected smartphone app that give you control of any live listening experience. (PRNewsFoto/Doppler Labs)

Doppler Labs teamed up with National Sawdust to bring Here Active Listening, the world’s first in-ear audio system that enables you to adjust real-world sound to your liking, to the first “Here Sound Experience.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Bassist and Doppler Labs Head of Music, Michael Thurber curated the event that took place on December 5 in Brooklyn along with National Sawdust Artistic and Executive Director, Paola Prestini. The event is memorable as it marks the first time Doppler Labs’ piece of wearable tech was used in this context. To demonstrate how Here Active Listening works in a live musical experience, Mr. Thurber performed along with celebrated violinists Tessa Lark and Charles Yang, renowned jazz pianist Kris Bowers, award-winning composer and percussionist Andy Akiho.

“What Doppler Labs has created with Here is a leap forward in how we experience live music and also how we experience the world around us,” explained Paola Prestini. “National Sawdust is a place for dreamers to dream and explorers to forge new ground. We love how Doppler Labs is reimagining listening and pushing the boundaries of what it means to experience live music. We spend a lot of time curating our schedule and selecting our partners, and we could not be more excited to work with an artist like Michael Thurber and the Doppler Labs team to create an unprecedented and forward-looking musical experience.”

The Here Active Listening System, which was announced by Doppler Labs back in June, includes two wireless earbuds and a companion app that enables the wearer to control and modify the surrounding live audio on the fly. The companion app gives access to volume sliders, and equalizer and various effects that really alter live music experiences such as the one that took place at National Sawdust.

“Our technology is grounded in our belief that audio can be transformative,” added Noah Kraft, CEO and Co-Founder of Doppler Labs. “The ears are powerful tools, and we hope our tech will be used as an instrument to bring out the true potential of human hearing; we want to give every listener personalized control. Here Active Listening was designed to help enhance life’s greatest moments, and live music experiences are just the beginning of our long term vision. We could not be happier to showcase Here in the incredible room at National Sawdust and create a magical acoustical experience that brings our technology to life.”

Only 10,000 pairs of the Here Active Listening in-ear audio system will be made in the initial production run, and these will be distributed to the backers of the Kickstarter campaign that ended about two weeks ago, as well as to selected musicians and people working in this industry.

It’s also possible to join a waiting list on the Here Active Listening website, in case Doppler Labs decides to expand the production. Of course, that will also depend on how the music industry perceives this piece of wearable tech. At $199, which is how much it cost during the crowdfunding campaign, Here Active Listening isn’t exactly cheap, but this kind of innovation is well worth the money.

Fleye Is the Safest Flying Robot in the World

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 10:55 AM PST

Fleye World's Safest Drone 01

Most drones feature blade guards nowadays, but even with those, approaching the blades from the wrong angle could have horrible effects. That’s definitely not the case with Fleye, the world’s safest drone.

Developed by the eponymous company based in Liege, Belgium, Fleye is a drone that you can safely push away without having to fear that your fingers might get hurt in the process. Drone accidents are rare, but they do happen, assuming that people use other models than Fleye, and when they do, they usually make the news. While it’s not excluded to make the news while using Fleye, it’s guaranteed that it will be for different reasons. Some of the possible uses include aerial photography and video shooting, innovative drone applications based on the open API and SDK, marketind, education and research.

What makes Fleye the safest drone on the planet is the design. The rotor is no longer protected by just a guard, as is the case with conventional drones, but by grids on the upper and lower sides. Other than that, Fleye is also shielded on the sides, thus taking the risk of personal injury to zero. In terms of dimensions, this flying robot is about the same size and weight as a soccer ball, 23 cm in diameter and 450 grams (or 9 inches and 16 ounces).

Fleye isn’t only good looking, but also smart, as it packs a dual-core CPU, 512MB RAM, and runs on Linux. The HD camera it comes with is capable of recording video at 1080p 30fps, and can shoot stills at 5MP. Fleye equipped their flying robot with 7 sensors, namely an accelerometer, gyroscope, magneto sonar, optical flow, altimeter and GPS. The generic 3S 1500mAh LiPo battery with XT60 connector is easy to swap, and can keep the drone in the air for up to 10 minutes, which is longer than what you get with a typical quadcopter. In terms of speed, Fleye can fly at up to 15km/h (10mp/h) with an 8 km/h wind tolerance.

The camera can be used for shooting selfies, panaromas, but other autonomous modes are supported, as well, meaning that the drone can hover in place with a 10cm precision, or it can be controlled manually either with an RC receiver or from within the companion app, which will be available for both Android and iOS.

Fleye is hoping to hit the €175,000 ($190,000) funding goal on Kickstarter within the next 38 days, so that their flying robot makes it into mass-production. At press time, backers had pledged nearly €105,000, and according to Kicktraq, the campaign is trending toward €768,651, considering that the average daily pledges remain at the same level. Assuming that the project gets funded and that nothing goes wrong by the end of the campaign, backers who pledged €699 ($738) or more should expect to receive their Fleye drone in September 2016. Sure, it’s expensive, but if it’s safety and fantastic applications that you’re after, then there really is no alternative to it.

Most Expensive Star Wars LEGO Sets

Most Expensive Star Wars LEGO Sets

Being an avid collector means spending a lot of money on some awesome but very expensive things like High End Star Wars Lego Sets that are part of some limited collection. Even if you can’t afford to buy one, just looking at them and imagining you own it is pretty fun.

LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon

This is the Millennium Falcon! Of course it costs a lot of money! It’s the greatest spaceship in the universe, Star Wars or others. It’s also the biggest LEGO Star Wars model ever with over 5000 pieces and comes with Leia, Han, Luke, Obi-Wan and Chewie mini figures. You can buy and built it for $6,932.20!

LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series Tantive IV Rebel Blockade Runner

It’s a trap! Well, not exactly. You know the price, and you know it’s going to take you a very long time to build it. But for those who want a rebel blockade runner that’s meant to burst through Imperial sieges, maybe the $3,490.50 it costs doesn’t sound like much.

Lego Star Wars Death Star II

Built to scale with original, this death star model comes with 3,417-piece set and a display stand and sits 25 inches high, just so you know the $2,939.49 you pay for it aren’t going to waste.

LEGO Star Destroyer

For those who are into recreating scenes, there’s a mini blockade runner included. Voices? You can do them yourself. Buying it for $2,749.99? That’s for the 3,104 Pieces, which result in a model that’s over 3′ long.

LEGO Star Wars Set #10134 YWing Attack Starfighter

The Y-Wing fighter didn’t really have a lot of success in the Star Wars films, but if you can pay $2,199.99 for it, maybe you have a rich enough imagination to imagine a better ending for the pilots onboard.

LEGO Star Wars Episode 1: Darth Maul Sculpture

Made out of 1860 pieces, this is probably one of the creepier ways of spending $2,149.99 on LEGO or anything Star Wars related.

LEGO Star Wars Rebel Snowspeeder (10129)

The T-47 airspeeder features two wing-mounted laser cannons and a rear harpoon cannon, a special display stand and a collector’s stand, made out of 1457 pieces so you can imagine knocking over AT-ATs. Buy it for $2,069.99

LEGO Star Wars: Cloud City

Not a lot of good things happen to our bunch when they visit Lando in Cloud City, but it’s a super cool place, one has to admit. It includes 7 mini figures and is made out of 698 pieces. You can buy it for $1649.99.

LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer

Not just a Star Destroyer, but a Super one, including mini figures of Darth Vader (almost worth the entire price), Admiral Piett, Dengar and Bossk. It’s made out of 3152 pieces for you to assemble, and measures nearly 50 inches (124.5 cm) long and weighs nearly 8 pounds (3.5kg). You can buy it for $1,040.

Get 15% Off a 3-Month Subscription to Loot Crate

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 08:57 AM PST

Walyou Deals - Loot Crate - 3 Month Subscription 01

There are plenty of subscription boxes out there, with some of them including everything from shaving products to snacks, but none of them appeals to geeks as much as Loot Crate does. Walyou Deals brings you a 15% discount on a 3-month subscription to Loot Crate, something you shouldn’t miss if you are a mystery-loving geek.

You might think that the Loot Crate boxes feature toys and shirts whose designs are inspired from superhero movies, but they include so much more than that. Lots of topics are covered from sci-fi movies from the ’80s to modern games and unforgettable TV shows. The common denominator of all of the included products is that they could cause any geek’s heart to skip a bit. The 3-month subscription that’s available at a discounted price on Walyou Deals may not seem like much, but the high-quality contents will certainly get you hooked, and you’ll come back to Loot Crate begging for more before you know it.

One of the best aspects of the Loot Crate subscription boxes is that no two consecutive ones will ever have the same theme. If this month is all about fantasy, the next one might be about gaming or villains, but you’ll never know too much in advance, as the powers that be enjoy guarding these secrets. However, you should probably know that as part of this subscription, you’ll get a Galaxy-themed crate in December, which includes Star Wars and Halo products. Loot Crate even mentions an exclusive Funko Pop vinyl figure, but you won’t know which franchise it belongs to, nor the exact character that’s been immortalized in this geeky manner.

Each crate now contains a t-shirt, and while it will respect the monthly theme, you’ll have no idea what they’re about until you open the box. In order to avoid any unpleasant reactions, you’ll have to mention your size when ordering the subscription. Bear in mind that the t-shirts and all of the other items in this post are from October and November, so they won’t be included in any of the upcoming crates.

Besides t-shirts, each Loot Crate includes other 5 to 7 epic items that are tightly connected to the monthly theme. The excitement you’ll feel when unboxing new items each month is different than what you’d feel when knowing exactly what to expect. The mystery is one of the main things Loot Crate has such a huge following. Basically, the only thing that you can be certain about (besides the fact that there’s a t-shirt in the crate each and every time), is that there are only high-quality products.

The 3-month subscription to Loot Crate can be purchased on Walyou Deals for $49 (originally $58), but you’ll have to be quick, as the offer expires in 12 hours. Unfortunately, the Loot Crate can only be shipped for free in continental US, so if you happen to live in another country, you won’t be able to enjoy these unless you get help from a third-party.

Get Started with Drones with Syma X5C Explorers Quadcopter

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 07:17 AM PST

Syma X5C RC Quadcopter Drone with HD Camera

If you’re looking to buy your first drone ever, look no further than the Syma X5C, an incredibly affordable RC quadcopter with HD camera.

Learning how to fly a drone doesn’t take a long time, nor does this require any special skills that you’d have to be born with. However, before investing thousands upon thousands on professional drones, it’s recommended to take things slowly and approach this one step at a time. The Syma X5C Explorers RC quadcopter with HD camera was specifically built with beginners in mind, and the price definitely contributes to making it very appealing.

The manufacturer claims that the X5C is the ultimate drone for beginners, and that may as well be true. At 12.2 x 12.2 x 3.1 inches and 1.4 pounds in weight, the RC quadcopter is quite easy to control, while also being enough not to be taken away by the wind. That’s not to say that it cannot be lost, but that can be avoided by attaching a Bluetooth finder to it. Considering it’s dimensions, the X5C is adequate for both indoor and outdoor use, but it’s best to pay attention to it in both scenarios.

Syma X5C is powered by a 3.7V 500mAh Li-Polymer battery that takes 100 minutes to charge, and that keeps the drone operational for up to 7 minutes. Replacing the included camera module with a slightly heavier camera (keep in mind that GoPro is not supported, so you’d have to go with something lighter) will reduce the flying time, and it might cause the RC quadcopter to become more difficult to control.

Speaking of the camera module, the drone is equipped with an HD cam that provides a decent filming quality, considering the price point. As long as you don’t expect cinema quality, you should be satisfied with the results.

Above is an image with all the buttons and switches of the 2.4G 4-channel remote control. While it may seem complicated, you will get used to it in no time.

Below is a picture of everything you’ll find in Syma X5C’s package: the camera module and a microSD card, spare propeller blades, blade guards and the 3.7V 500mAh Li-Po battery, or in other words, almost everything you’d need to get started right away. The only things missing are 4 AA batteries for the controller, so you’ll have to supply those yourself.

Syma X5C Explorers can be purchased on Amazon for $48.80 (or $65.69, if you’d rather get it in a bundle that also contains a 32GB microSD card), which really is an incredible price for such a drone, especially since it is also equipped with an HD camera. Additional parts and colors are available here. That’s a small price to pay for anyone’s first drone, but that doesn’t mean that it lacks quality, so if you, or someone you know, would like to take the first steps in the world of quadcopters, place your order now to make sure that it arrives before Christmas!

Samsung Techwin America Launches BrightVIEW Baby Monitor

Posted: 07 Dec 2015 01:35 PM PST

Samsung Techwin America Unveils the BrightVIEW Baby Video Monitoring System (PRNewsFoto/Samsung Techwin America)

After becoming a parent, nothing is more important than making sure that your baby is safe and sound at night. Samsung Techwin America’s newly launched BrightView baby video monitoring system can definitely help them in this department.

Samsung Techwin America, one of the Korean giant’s lesser known subsidiaries, is in fact a leader in such businesses as Robot & Control, Security, Industry, Defense, and Energy. While baby monitors are not something new in its portfolio, the company felt the need to expand this line, and announced the BrightVIEW Baby Video Monitoring System.

“Today’s tech-savvy parents are looking for the latest innovations to comfortably monitor their children,” explained Richard Simone, Samsung Techwin America VP of Sales and Marketing. “With the BrightVIEW Baby Video Monitoring System’s visual and audio advancements, we’re reaffirming our commitment to providing users with unmatched convenience and quality to ensure the safety of their children.

The new line features a portable 720p HD camera with a 5.0″ LCD color touch screen that allows parents to keep an eye on their children’s movements even when they are away. The camera can be controlled quite easily using the monitor, which means that panning, tilting and zooming will provide a visual of the little ones from all of the available angles.

BrightVIEW baby monitor includes HD audio enhancements for two-way communication, meaning that the babies can be heard by the parents, who in turn can soothe them by cooing or singing lullabies. The fact that one of the parents goes out of town doesn’t mean that the baby has to feel his or her absent. To compensate for their absence, parents can playback one of the four pre-programmed lullabies that include such classics as Brahms Lullaby or Hush Little Baby. The included comforting night-light will help the toddlers slip into a pleasant dream even faster than they normally would, as it has a very calming effect over them. On top of that, the BrightVIEW monitor can remind new parents of the baby’s next feeding time.

Since Samsung Techwin is one of the big names in the surveillance industry, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the camera included in this baby monitoring system features night vision capabilities up to 16 feet, and Pure Digital Signal over the 2.4Ghz frequency for secure and interference-free video. Because of this technology, the monitoring system works at up to 900 feet with no interferences from wireless routers, microwave ovens or cordless phones.

The BrightVIEW Baby Monitoring System can include up to four cameras that can be either installed in four different rooms, or can be used to monitor four different infants in the same room. The kit can be purchased now from Kohl’s, Target and buybuy BABY (soon enough it should show up on Amazon, as well), with a starting price of $229.99. That’s not exactly a cheap baby monitor, but considering the technologies implemented in this one, the price is entirely worth it!

DIY AT-AT Cable Organizer & Card Case 01

Until everything we use will be wireless, we either have to get used with messy desks full of cables, or turn to this DIY AT-AT cable organizer and card case.

Star Wars merchendise (as well as anything inspired by George Lucas’ space saga) sells like hot pancakes anyway, so there wasn’t really a need for a new movie to come out for geeks to buy anything that resembles even remotely something from the original trilogy. The product in question, a DIY AT-AT cable organizer and card case that’s currently available on Walyou Deals is not only a joy to look at, but also something very functional, as it keeps you from having a messy desk by putting all of your cables in order. On top of that, it arrived just in time for both the holidays and the next episode of the Star Wars saga.

DIY kits bring both kids and grown-ups a lot of joy, as they start with what initially look like random pieces, and end up with the pictured product which they can proceed to use immediately. The AT-AT cable organizer and card case is delivered as a flat-packed DIY kit, so turning it into a four-legged All-Terrain walker is your job. Moreover, since it’s made out of plain high-grade plywood and basswood, you can even proceed to painting it in your favorite colors. Truth be told, the AT-ATs in the Star Wars movies were of a dull gray, but nothing can stop you from getting creative there.

Putting it together really is an effortless task, as an instructions manual is included, along with all of the nuts and screws you could possibly need. Even though the instructions manual is in Chinese, the pictures it includes are pretty straight-forward.

It’s up to you how you want to use it, as it can hide wires, surge protectors, and even remotes in its wooden body. Not only that, but the DIY AT-AT cable organizer and card case can be turned into a geeky home for business cards.

All in all, the DIY AT-AT cable organizer and card case can help you become a better person overall, as people who keep their things in order are known to be more productive. Add to that the geekiness factor of the product, and the amazing reactions that you’ll get from anyone seeing it, and you’ll notice that the price to pay for it isn’t that high at all, especially since there’s also a discount for this deal.

The DIY AT-AT cable organizer and card case can be purchased for $34.99 (originally $40) from Walyou Deals. Bear in mind that the offer expires within a day, so you need to act fast, if you need to keep the cables on your desk tidy and don’t mind a touch of classic Star Wars.
